The Public Apology team are all unabashed advocates of the universal right to freedom of speech.
As a proud contrarian sports blog, we believe everyone has the right to express a feeling, opinion or idea – no matter how stupid – without fear of censorship (except of course, in the instance of hate speech, or yelling “fire” in a crowded cinema, etc).
Like the rest of the sane world, we are shocked and appalled at the tragic terrorist attack which took place in Paris this week.
While Charlie Hebdo may not be everyone’s cup of tea, in any sensible society they deserve to be able to publish their opinions. They certainly don’t deserve to lose their lives over the publication of a cartoon, no matter how distasteful it may be.
In the spirit of defiance and solidarity with a fellow satirical publication, The Public Apology has taken the decision to publish its very own cartoon of Mohammad… Azharuddin.
While Azharuddin was implicated in a match-fixing scandal in 2000, and banned for life, we are determined to uphold our right to represent the disgraced former India captain in pictorial form.
Freedom of speech is one of the bedrocks of our society. We will continue to stand up for it.
